NSW: Speed Cameras target black spots

The New South Wales government says new high-tech speed cameras which can detect a
speeding car in a line of vehicles will be used at accident black spots over the Christmas
holidays.

Roads Minister CARL SCULLY says the first of 25 new cameras will be introduced before
Christmas as part of a $4.5 million holiday road safety package that will target speeding
and drink driving.

The cameras use advanced digital technology to identify a speeding car in a line of
vehicles and can monitor two or three lanes at once.

Mr SCULLY says the cameras are to save lives by deterring speeding, so the sites will
be clearly marked with warning signs to urge drivers to slow down.

The camera sites were selected by the Roads and Traffic Authority in consultation with
the NSW police service and the NRMA.

Double demerits will apply from 12 midnight on Tueday, December 23 to 12 midnight on
Monday, January 3.
